Jim found these 2 Common Redpolls at his feeder on
Dec 13th. Jim noted that these are the species which are being
reported all along the Lake Erie area coming from the boreal forest
due to poor cone and nut production in Canada. He says this is the
same reason we have had Evening Grosbeaks and so many Red-breasted
Nuthatches all fall.

These photos were
taken on Thanksgiving weekend in Saybrook Ohio by some friends who
have watched the fledgling and it's parents over the past year.

Jim McConnor photographed this Yellow-billed Cuckoo on June 15 at
Chagrin River Park. He believes it's probably a nesting bird
to be hanging around this time of the month. It was on the south
side (over the bridge) on the left path almost to the parking lot.
Barbara Savage has a nesting pair of screech
owls in her yard.......
"We
finally discovered Mr. Screech in a tree when he was cooing to
Madame while she had her head out of the box. Today, while
his parents were roosting in nearby trees, this fledgling
popped up - well, you can sort of see his fuzzy head near the
bottom of the hole if you look closely.
"

Barbara also found this bluebird...
"Finally,
there is a photo of a bluebird on a motorbike who seems to be saying,
"Got ZOOM?""

sited this Purple Sandpiper at Mentor Headlands State Park in
Painesville, Ohio on December 19th. Sally observed 5 of them near
the breakwall. She said it was quite windy and did not go all the
way out to the end of the breakwall to look for more because it
was around 40 degrees less the wind chill.

Jim McConnor snapped
this photo of a Cattle Egret that Jerry Talkington found at
Tamarac Apt. Complex on Tamarac Rd off of Lost Nation Rd in Willoughby
(11/20). Its a rare find for Lake County Ohio so take a trip down Lost
Nation Road and see if you can observe this Cattle Egret.
DIRECTIONS: Tamarac
Drive is off Lost Nation Road just across from the main buildings of
the Lost Nation Airport; from SR 2, get off at Lost Nation Road and
drive north; in about a mile or so you'll see the airport on the right
and on the left a LARGE BROWN SIGN saying "Tamarac Apartments"; turn
left (west) at this sign and drive about 1/4 mile or so west (driving
through a large number of condo/apartment complexes) until you see the
large weedy field on the right;

Anders
Fjeldstad, Ray Hannikman, Jim McConnor, Larry Rosche, and Beulah
Shanks saw this ROSS'S GOOSE in Fairport, Ohio on November 8th, 2006.
We easily found the bird on
the north side of Fairport-Nursery Road in the now-grassy fields of
the old Diamond Shamrock Company. The area is now undergoing a
'Brownfield Conversion' and will (after the toxics are 'cleaned up' )
in the future have some shops, condos, and some 'park' areas.
He was on the north side of
the road with a number of Canada Geese, all feeding on the new grass.
After about 20 minutes or so, he flew up and around and over our heads
giving us great views of his black tipped wings and stubby bill before
landing on the south side of the road. Although you can not walk the
fields, you can easily see him from the road through the new green
colored chain link fence. He was about 30 to 40 yards away.
Later, after looking for the
Kittiwake in the harbor at Fairport, we returned and easily found him
again on the south side of the road with the Canadas.
A Ross's Goose is a western
bird rarely seen in Ohio and never seen before in the 'Headlands Area'
and perhaps never seen before in Lake County either; in any case, an
easy bird to find and add to you Ohio or Life List (as Beulah did!).

During the Blackbrook Audubon
IBA birdwalk at Chagrin River Park in Willoughby YESTERDAY (google up
"Lake Metroparks" for directions), we found a
DICKCISSEL underneath the high voltage power line corridor;
we saw it about 10 am on Sunday, June 11th.
At noon I was back again with
my wife Joyce (who hadn't been on the walk); we found it again and
then went out for a fast food lunch and returned to the park; around 1
pm, Jerry Talkington showed up and I walked with him up the "Horse
Loop Trail" and we found it singing and then saw it, sitting on a
Teasel, about 10 or so feet away!
Today, Monday June 12th, I
went back to the park and saw and heard it again at 9:30am; he's in
the Northwest area of the park; instead of entering the park at the
Reeves Road entrance (which is just a few feet up Lost Nation Road
exit of SR 2 in Willoughby), drive instead another 3/4 mile northwest
on Reeves Road to Rural Road and enter the park here (there's a sign
here!); drive back and park under the power towers and walk a hundred
feet or so on the "Horse Loop Trail"; it curves around and starts to
go up the hill; when you see the #12 Vent Pipe (there are a number of
white plastic pipe coming out of the ground here since this is an old
landfill) you should hear him sing his "dick-ciss-ciss" song and see
him sitting on last year's Teasel or this year's Yellow Clover; -

This is a female
Red-necked Phalarope in breeding plumage seen for two days at the
Headlands Beach State Park on 5/14-5/15 by Jim McConnor. It is a
fairly rare sighting in the spring as most are seen in Northern Ohio
during fall migration in basic plumage meaning gray, black and white.
The red neck is only seen in the spring during breeding. The female's
plumage is brighter than the male.
Amazingly two
Kirtland's
Warblers were seen at Headlands Beach State Park on the 10th of May,
2006. At least seven members including John Pogacnik and Jim
McConnor of the club were able to veiw the spectacle. This is the
first (maybe 2nd time depending on who you ask ) that a Kirtland's has
been seen at the Headlands and never two at once.
Another
Kirtland's Warbler (young female) was found by Anders Fjeldstad,
John and Ann Edwards and subsequently seen by Deborah Kibble, Tom
and Alice Faren, Jim McConnor, Ted Gilliand and Paula Lozano
on May 22nd, 2006 at Headlands.
Mary Toth spotted this Chukar
(Alectoris chukar), a game bird native to southern Eurasia, which
has been introduced into the Western United States and southern
Canada. How it came to be on a deck in Auburn, Ohio is
anybody's guess.

picture of a Juvenile Cooper's Hawk
The
picture was taken in my back yard in Mentor on the Lake Jan 20th. It
was chasing House Sparrows that had all flown into a yew that is in
front of my shed. It actually flew into the center of the yew and
all the sparrows flew out and away but he then flew to the top of
the fence and watched to see if anymore sparrows appeared which they
did not. I got a chuckle out of watching this little comedy
unfold.
I say comedy because no little birds got eaten.
He was there for
about 15 minutes just looking. a good caption might be "Where's
the beef?".
